Billy Busch, an heir to giant Ansheuser-Busch, talked to TMZ and condemned the controversial partnership with Dylan Mulvaney, saying, “My ancestors would have rolled over in their graves.”
Busch’s bold statement
In an interview, Busch told TMZ, “I think my family — my ancestors would have rolled over in their graves.” Busch continued, “They believed that transgender, gays, that sort of thing was all a very personal issue.”
Patriotic statement
The heir added, “They loved this country because it is a free country and people are allowed to do what they want, but it was never meant to be on a beer can and never meant to be pushed in people’s faces.”
People who actually drink beer
The TMZ host explained that Bud Light was thinking about inclusiveness and asked Busch what was behind the reaction after Dylan’s viral Instagram post.
Beer with a message
The heir responded, “You know, I think people who drink beer, I think they’re your common folk. I think they are the blue-collar worker who goes and works hard every single day. The last thing they want to be drinking is a beer can with that kind of message on it.”
The heir expressed his views
Busch further explained, “I just don’t think that’s what they’re looking for. They want their beer to be truly American, truly patriotic, as it always has been. Truly, America’s beer, which Bud Light was and probably isn’t any longer.”
The reporter was not buying it
Levin, however, was not having it. He said, “Absolutely, it’s prejudice,” adding, “Ook, I remember my dad telling me stories that there were bars in LA that used to have signs that said, ‘No dogs, no Jews.’ So there’s been a history of prejudice in the country.”
Levin continued pressing
TMZ host pushed back more by asserting, “People get over certain things. It’s happened to Jews. It’s happened to black people. It’s happening to gay people, and it’s happening to transgender people. So to me, it is absolutely prejudice.”
Another daring statement
Busch caught TMZ host by surprise, saying, “Well, I just think prejudice against Jews against Black people, those kinds of things are a totally different deal.”
Anheuser-Busch fired workers
In July, the company fired around 2 percent of its workforce. Further, reports claim they will sell eight of their brands to a Canadian company.
Bad timing
Bud Light’s partnership with Mulvaney came at the same time many states introduced anti-trans bills, and the public backlash was so severe that it caused the parent company to lose around 10 percent compared to the same period last year.
The downfall of Bud Light
A recent survey suggested that Bud Light went from being America’s best-selling beer to no longer being among the top 10. But the backlash did not only come from conservatives.
Losing liberal customers
Mulvaney complained that the company offered no support while she allegedly faced unimaginable transphobia. That led LGBTQ buyers and allies to boycott the beer as well.
