U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon paused deadlines in Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents case days after reports came out that the former president shared America’s nuclear submarines with a member of his Mar-a-Lago resort.
The trial date was not mentioned
The trial, set for May 20, 2024, was not mentioned, but the Judge announced that all of the scheduled deadlines related to classified information are on hold “pending consideration and resolution.”
Trump’s filing from September
In September, Trump’s legal team’s filing accused Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team of “unjust efforts…to foist rushed CIPA litigation on the Court, President Trump, and his co-defendants.”
Motion to delay
A more recent filing asked for the Judge to move the trial date until “in or after mid-November 2024.” Trump’s attorneys wrote, “The March 4, 2023 trial date in the District of Columbia, and the underlying schedule in that case, currently require President Trump and his lawyers to be in two places at once.”
Judge Cannon’s order
Judge Cannon “signed a paperless order halting for now the deadlines she’d previously set stretching from October through May, when the trial for Trump and three of his co-defendants is currently slated to begin in Fort Pierce, Florida,” wrote Messanger.
New allegations
ABC News reported that after leaving the White House, Trump allegedly “discussed potentially sensitive information about U.S. nuclear submarines with a member of his Mar-a-Lago Club, an Australian billionaire who then allegedly shared the information with scores of others, including more than a dozen foreign officials, several of his own employees, and a handful of journalists, according to sources familiar with the matter.”
Things went from bad to worse
“The potential disclosure was reported to special counsel Jack Smith’s team as they investigated Trump’s alleged hoarding of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, the sources told ABC News,” the publication shared.
Further light
“The information could shed further light on Trump’s handling of sensitive government secrets,” the outlet reported.
Legal experts are baffled by Cannon’s decision
“Judge Cannon puts CIPA deadlines on hold until she rules on Trump’s pending motions,” national security lawyer Bradley Moss wrote on X, adding, “Now the real question becomes how long it takes her to make a ruling.”
Delay and delay
“She is going to delay and delay. She has already been an embarrassment, and it’s going to get much worse,” warned Georgia State Law professor Eric Segall.
Putting May trial at risk
“Not a good sign for those who want a trial in May. We haven’t even reached the point in CIPA where the court has truly difficult decisions to make,” wrote Brandon Van Grack, a former Justice Department official who served on special counsel Bob Mueller’s team.
Moving slowly
Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance shared, “Realistically, delays can sometimes be necessary to accommodate issues involving classified discovery, but this seems over much,” and added, “This is a judge who is happy to see the case move slowly.”
Right on time
“And right on time,” MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin said, “and even before October 12, enter Judge Cannon, with the first step of the relief Trump wanted in postponing the classified documents case.”
