“Abominable and embarrassing:” John Lauro’s behavior toward Judge Chutkan will backfire in a big way

Former federal prosecutor Cynthia Alksne weighed in on Trump’s attorney’s behavior during the trial date hearing and branded it as “embarrassing.”

The former federal prosecutor discussed Lauro’s reported behavior with MSNBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin. According to everything from the trial date hearing, the host stated that Lauro already has a “big problem.”

The former prosecutor, Alksne, stated, “He can ask to have her reconsider, and perhaps apologize for his behavior, which was abominable and embarrassing, and ask her to reconsider.”

The lawyer was not cooperative

Alksne continued, “One of the things that happened in the court was she said, ‘Give me another date; we’re not going to give you April two years from now. Give me a date,’ and he refused to do it.”

The Judge told Lauro to chill out

Alksne shared that Lauro “refused in such a rude way, she had to say to them, ‘Take the temperature down.'”

The credibility problem

The former federal prosecutor explained, “When a federal judge has to tell you several times to take the temperature down and treat you like a small child on the first day of kindergarten, you have a big problem– a credibility problem.”

This will reflect poorly on his client, Trump

Alksne added, “You have a problem in the courtroom that will hurt your client down the line, and he did not help Trump in any way with his behavior.”

Trial date requests

Judge Chutkan set the trial date for March 4. The prosecution requested January 2, while Trump’s attorney requested April 2026. The Judge tried to find the middle ground, reporters close to the case claim, but Lauro refused. If Chutkan’s start date holds, attorneys estimate that the case could reach a verdict by May.

A “legal avalanche”

Alksne previously worked in the DOJ Civil Rights Division and as an assistant U.S. attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office. In March, she predicted, “We have an indictment coming out of New York, we have an indictment in Fulton County that looks like it’s coming, we have the E. Jean Carroll that will be tried in April, and we have the Dominion suit, which has a lot to do with Trump and lies. It’s an amazing legal avalanche on the shoulders of Trump right now.”

Trump reacted to Chutkan’s ruling

On Truth Social, the former president complained, “A biased, Trump Hating Judge gave me … just what our corrupt government wanted, SUPER TUESDAY!” He added, “I will APPEAL!” However, Alksne reminded that his lawyer never once filed a motion to change the date, and that’s for a good reason.

Others followed

Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican, wrote on X, “Chutkan should be thrown off the bench. Donalds added, “Their attempts to interfere with the 2024 election are so brazen it’s disgusting.”

MSNBC host stated Trump’s delay tactic backfired

Mohyeldin wondered why would an innocent person want such a significant delay in the trial, pointing out that it would be almost two years after the elections. He asked the former federal prosecutor if trial calendars are subjects of appeals. She simply answered, “No.”

Two possible futures

Former federal prosecutor Paul Rosenzweig said, “We’re looking at two possible futures. In one, Trump is convicted, and Biden wins the election. In the other, the trial ends with a hung jury, and Trump wins the election — after which he kills the two federal cases and leans on the Georgia Legislature to kill the prosecution there.”
