A girl rejected a rejection letter from Duke University in 2015. Her letter ended up on TikTok, where the video gathered over 210k views.
The rejection letter
Siobhan O’Dell was 17 when she received that she won’t be attending Duke University. On her Tumblr, she shared her response: “After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me admission into the Fall 2015 freshman class at Duke.”
The girl put some humor in her email
O’Dell added she was “fortunate enough” to receive more rejection letters from “the best and brightest universities in the country.”
The big declaration
She concluded, “Despite Duke’s outstanding success in rejecting previous applicants, you simply did not meet my qualifications. Therefore, I will not be attending Duke University’s 2015 freshman class.”
Duke University is exceptionally selective
Though this university is not as famous as Yale or Harvard, it is among the highest-ranked universities in the US and beyond. The acceptance rate is 8.9%, meaning out of 100 applicants, only nine get in.
O’Dell talked to CBS News
The then-teenager shared that it was supposed to be a joke, and she did not think for a second that Duke would respond. She shared that she wanted “to give colleges a taste of their own medicine,” adding, “I had no idea the response would be this huge.”
But Duke responded
Though O’Dell did not get into the prestigious university, she got a reply saying, “I understand how disappointed you are that we were unable to offer you a space in our incoming class.
That was a surprise
It continued, “Please know that our decision was not a judgment of you as a student or a person but a reflection of our limited space and talented applicant pool.”
The girl found a perfect fit for her
O’Dell was accepted into the University of South Carolina. She studied Pre-med Biology. She gave a message to all kids who are obsessing over getting into the “right” university, saying, “Don’t stress too much. It’s not worth it.”
Comments on TikTok were mostly positive
One person shared, This is how it should be. Colleges should be lucky to have us and not just be a form of capitalism to establish hierarchy.” Many praised the teen’s sense of humor, writing, “This is hilarious,” and even saying, “She should be accepted just for that.”

A comment read, “The girl went viral in 2015; thanks, TikTok.” Less informed wanted to know if O’Dell was accepted and where she ended up. Regardless, most TikTok users agreed this was “girl boss energy.”
